Project Officer Mesaid Omar leading an activity under the HAKI MAZINGIRA project
This project aims to empower Indigenous communities in Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu Counties, Kenya, by building their capacity to co-create innovative and inclusive smart climate solutions. It addresses the significant impacts of climate change in these areas, such as unpredictable rainfall, rising sea levels, and natural disasters, which have far-reaching effects on livelihoods, agriculture, and the environment. The program focuses on equipping local communities with tools, knowledge, and collaborative platforms to enhance climate resilience while promoting sustainable development aligned with cultural values and modern strategies.
The initiative seeks to strengthen community involvement in decision-making processes by addressing barriers to public participation, such as corruption and exclusion. It emphasizes the importance of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in climate mitigation efforts, ensuring that the solutions developed are not only sustainable but also culturally relevant and inclusive.
The project involves training sessions to enhance technical knowledge on climate resilience, resource mobilization to fund local innovations, and fostering partnerships with key stakeholders. HAKI Africa leads this initiative in partnership with Faza Youth Action Group, Malindi Community Human Rights Centre, and Pemba Community. Together, these organizations provide support for Indigenous communities to take active roles in shaping policies and implementing climate action plans.
